1. Introduction
Welcome to LifeAway ("we," "our," or "the app"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and personal data. LifeAway is developed and operated by James Aitchison, an individual developer based in Spain, and is subject to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish data protection laws.
This privacy policy explains how we handle your data, your privacy rights, and how we comply with applicable data protection laws. By using LifeAway, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. Data Controller
The data controller responsible for your personal data is:
James Aitchison
Email: [email protected]
For any questions or concerns about your privacy or this policy, please contact us at the email address above.
3. Our Privacy Commitment
LifeAway is designed with privacy at its core:
- Local-First Storage: All your time tracking data, life visualizations, and personal information are stored locally on your device. We do not have access to this data.
- No User Accounts: The app does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal identifying information to use the app.
- No Remote Servers: We do not store your app data on our servers or any third-party servers.
- Optional iCloud Sync: If you have iCloud enabled on your device, your data may sync to your private iCloud account, which is controlled by you and Apple's privacy policy.
4. Information We Collect
4.1 Information You Provide in the App
When you use LifeAway, you create and store information locally on your device, including:
- Time tracking entries and activity categories
- Your age and life expectancy estimate
- Wasteful and meaningful activities
- Any other data you choose to input into the app
This data is stored exclusively on your device and is not transmitted to us or any third party.
4.2 Website Email Collection
If you sign up for our waitlist on our website (lifeaway.app), we collect your email address through our email service provider, Moosend. This email is used solely to notify you about the app launch and updates. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link provided in our emails.
4.3 Analytics Data
To improve the app and understand how it's being used, we may collect limited, anonymized analytics data through Apple's built-in analytics framework, including:
- Device type and iOS version
- App version and build number
- Crash reports and performance metrics
- Aggregated, non-identifying usage patterns (e.g., which features are used most frequently)
- General location data (country/region level only, not precise location)
This analytics data is anonymized and cannot be used to identify you personally. Apple processes this data in accordance with their privacy policy.
4.4 Payment Information
If you purchase premium features through Apple In-App Purchase, all payment processing is handled entirely by Apple. We do not collect, store, or have access to your payment card details or financial information. Apple may share limited transaction information with us (such as whether a purchase was successful) but no financial details.
4.5 Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any identifying information within the app
- Your precise geolocation or GPS coordinates
- Your contacts, photos, or other device data unrelated to the app's functionality
- Your browsing history or activity outside the app
- Biometric data or health information
5. How We Use Your Information
We use the limited data we collect for the following purposes:
- Service Improvement: Anonymized analytics help us understand app performance, identify bugs, and improve features.
- Communications: If you provided your email on our website, we use it to send you app launch notifications and important updates (you can opt out anytime).
- Legal Compliance: We may process data to comply with legal obligations, such as responding to valid legal requests.
We do not use your data for advertising, marketing to third parties, or any purpose beyond those listed above.
6. Data Storage and iCloud Sync
All your app data is stored locally on your iOS device using Apple's SwiftData framework. We do not have access to this data.
Optional iCloud Sync: If you have iCloud enabled in your device settings, your LifeAway data may automatically sync to your private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit service. This sync is:
- Controlled by your device's iCloud settings (not by us)
- Encrypted by Apple using industry-standard encryption
- Stored in your personal iCloud storage (not on our servers)
- Subject to Apple's privacy policy and terms of service
You can disable iCloud sync at any time through your iOS device settings. If you disable iCloud, your data will only be stored locally on your device.
7. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for their marketing purposes.
The only third parties that may process limited data are:
- Apple Inc.: Processes anonymized analytics, crash reports, iCloud sync (if enabled), and in-app purchases. Subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Moosend: Processes email addresses collected on our website for waitlist notifications. Subject to Moosend's Privacy Policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a valid court order, subpoena, or government request.
8. Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously:
- Local Storage: Your app data is protected by your device's security measures (passcode, Face ID, Touch ID).
- iCloud Encryption: If synced to iCloud, your data is encrypted both in transit and at rest by Apple.
- No Central Database: Since we don't store your data on our servers, there is no central database that could be breached.
- Minimal Data Collection: We only collect the minimum data necessary to operate and improve the app.
While we implement appropriate security measures, please note that no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. You are responsible for protecting your device and iCloud account.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
App Data: Your locally stored data remains on your device until you delete it. You can delete your data at any time using the in-app data deletion feature in the app's settings, or by uninstalling the app.
iCloud Data: If you've synced data to iCloud, you'll need to delete it from your iCloud account separately through your iOS settings or by using the in-app deletion feature on all devices synced to your iCloud account.
Email Data: If you signed up for our waitlist, we retain your email address until you unsubscribe or request deletion by contacting [email protected].
Analytics Data: Anonymized analytics data is retained by Apple in accordance with their data retention policies and cannot be linked back to you.
10. Your Privacy Rights (GDPR)
As a user in the European Union, you have the following rights under GDPR:

- Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission

- Consent: When you provide your email on our website or enable analytics in your device settings.
- Contract Performance: To provide the app's functionality and premium features you've purchased.
- Legitimate Interests: To improve the app, fix bugs, and ensure security (balanced against your privacy rights).
- Legal Obligation: To comply with applicable laws and legal processes.
